Muslim family commits suicide in Karnataka over ‘debt and harassment’ by lenders

A family of 5 was found dead in their home in Sadashivanagar locality of Tumkur city, on Sunday. The family included — Garib Saab (42), and his wife Sumayya (35), who hanged themselves whilst their children Hazira (14), Subhan (10), and Muneer (8) were found lying dead in the bed.

According to a prima facie report by police, it seems Garib Saab and his wife killed their three children before killing themselves. The Police said that they retrieved a suicide note of two pages and a video of Saab mentioning that he was living in abject poverty and was harassed by the lenders for not being able to repay the loan he had taken from them.

“We got information on Sunday evening that a family of five were found dead in Tilak Park Police Station Limits. Two adults were found hanging. Three children were found lying on a bed and had strangulation marks on their necks. Before the death, they have sent videos to their relatives and we are studying the content,” the Police said.

The Police said that Saab used to run a Kebab shop and had borrowed 1.5 lakhs from institutions and individuals but failed to repay the loans.

In the video, Saab reportedly requested G Parameshwara, the Home Minister of Karnataka, and the police officials to subject the accused (who forced the family into taking the drastic step) to penalty.

The Police have detained the accused — Khalandar, his children Sania & Shahbaz, their neighbour Shabana and her daughter Sania who are the residents of the same building as Saab.

Hailing from Lakkenahalli village in Shira Taluk of Tumkur, Saab shifted to the town for children’s education. Poverty-ridden family was lent a loan by many including Khalander but with unreasonably high interest and was reportedly harassing him and his family members.

G Parameshwar visited the mortuary, expressed his condolences as he met the relatives of the deceased, and promised to take action.

Police reported that they have registered a case of murder and abetment to commit suicide against the accused, as well as the deceased couple, under suspicion that the couple might have strangled their children before killing themselves. Further probe into the case is underway.
