A Muslim man was arrested in Hyderabad’s Narayanguda area on Saturday following allegations of making derogatory remarks about Hindu deities and idol worship. The incident, which occurred on Friday night at a local eatery, led to communal tension in the area.
According to eyewitnesses and a video circulating online, the confrontation began over a dispute about receiving ₹140 in change after the man had paid a ₹450 bill. In a heated exchange with another customer, the man reportedly said, “I paid ₹450. I should get back ₹140… but they got angry with me.” He further stated, “I am a Muslim and I am steadfast in my faith. These people worship stones,” in reference to idol worship, which reportedly angered other customers present.
Soon after, tensions escalated, with people seen confronting and pushing the man. Police arrived at the scene to control the situation.
Narayanguda Station House Officer (SHO) U. Chandra Shekar confirmed to Siasat.com that the man was arrested and booked under Sections 302 (hurting religious sentiments), 196 (disturbing communal harmony), and 351 (criminal intimidation) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). He has been remanded to 14 days in judicial custody. Police have chosen not to reveal the man’s identity to avoid further unrest.
BJP Goshamahal MLA T. Raja Singh, known for his strong Hindutva stance, shared the video of the incident online and praised the police for their swift action. “Those who insult Hindu Gods should be booked under stringent laws to deter others,” he said, adding that communal peace must be upheld regardless of religion.
Hyderabad Police have urged citizens to maintain peace and avoid sharing inflammatory content on social media. They have also warned against actions that could incite communal disharmony.
