In Uttarakhand’s Vikasnagar, two Muslim youths rescued two young girls after their mother allegedly threw them into the swollen Shakti Canal and jumped in herself. The incident took place on May 16, and a video of the rescue has now surfaced, drawing praise for the bravery of the rescuers.
The woman, identified as Kiran Chandel, reportedly jumped into the canal with her two daughters amid the strong current. While the children were rescued, Kiran could not be saved and later died.
According to reports, two local youths, Soheb and Mukarram, noticed the woman jumping into the canal with the children. Without waiting for help, both men immediately entered the fast-flowing water to rescue them.
Despite the dangerous conditions, the two managed to pull the girls out safely. A video of the rescue shows the men struggling against the strong current to save the children, with many people describing their actions as an example of humanity and courage.
After rescuing the girls, Soheb reportedly held the children close and rushed them to a hospital without delay. Their quick response is believed to have saved both girls’ lives.
Mother’s Body Recovered a Day Later
While the children survived, Kiran Chandel was swept away by the canal’s strong flow. On May 17, a team from the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) recovered her body near the Dhakrani Power House and handed it over to the police.
Rescuers Honoured by Police
Recognising their bravery, the Dehradun Rural Police invited Soheb and Mukarram to the office and honoured them for risking their lives to save the children.
