Health authorities are closely monitoring a rise in Covid-19 infections across several Indian cities, coinciding with a resurgence of cases in parts of Asia, including Hong Kong and Singapore. While case numbers remain low compared to previous waves, Mumbai, Chennai, and Ahmedabad have reported noticeable increases.
Mumbai recorded 95 new Covid-19 cases in May, nearly matching the total cases reported in Maharashtra since January. At least 16 patients are hospitalized, many transferred from KEM Hospital to Seven Hills Hospital to limit further spread. Authorities are testing all patients with influenza-like symptoms for Covid-19.
Pune currently has no active Covid-19 cases in public hospitals but has reserved 50 beds at Naidu Hospital as a precaution. Dr. Nina Borade, Pune’s health chief, confirmed only one case in May, who has recovered. Testing is paused in civic hospitals pending updated central guidelines.
Tamil Nadu and Puducherry reported new cases, with doctors in Chennai noting an increase in Covid-19 among patients with fever, previously attributed to influenza. Hospitals have delayed critical surgeries due to infection risks.
Karnataka reports 16 active cases, while Ahmedabad saw an unusual spike with seven new cases detected in a single day. All Ahmedabad patients are isolating at home, and genomic testing is underway.
Despite the World Health Organization declaring the pandemic over in May 2023, Covid-19 remains endemic. Most new cases in India are mild, with no recent deaths or ICU admissions linked to the rise. Experts recommend continuing precautions, especially for vulnerable groups, including mask-wearing in enclosed spaces, hand hygiene, and influenza vaccinations to reduce risks of co-infections.
