The National Investigation Agency has arrested an MBBS student from Uttar Dinajpur district in West Bengal for alleged links to extremist organisations. Officials confirmed the arrest on Saturday.

The accused, identified as Janisur Alam, also known as Nisar Alam, studies medicine at Al Falah University in Haryana. His family is originally from Konal village near Dalkhola. He currently lives in Ludhiana.

Police sources said NIA teams picked him up from the Surjapur Bazar area on Friday morning while he was returning from a family wedding. Investigators had reportedly been tracking his movements through mobile tower location data.

A senior police officer said Alam had travelled to his ancestral village with his mother and sister to attend a relative’s wedding. As he was heading back, NIA officers intercepted him based on prior surveillance. Another officer said he had been seen moving aimlessly near a local railway station shortly before his detention. During questioning, he allegedly tried to escape, after which he was formally taken into custody.

The NIA seized digital devices, documents and other material from him. He has reportedly been taken to Siliguri for further interrogation.

Investigators are now examining whether Alam has any connection to the recent explosion near Delhi’s Red Fort. The blast killed thirteen people and left several others injured. The government has described the incident as a terrorist attack. The NIA has not yet disclosed what evidence links the student to the incident. A senior official said the agency is still verifying whether he had any direct role and that the investigation is continuing.

Family members have strongly denied the allegations. His uncle described him as quiet, polite and focused on his studies. His mother said the accusations are impossible to believe and insisted her son has always been law abiding.

In the same case, the NIA earlier raided the home of Moinul Hasan, a migrant labourer from the Nabagram area in Murshidabad. Hasan had worked in Delhi and Mumbai and is said to have shared accommodation in Delhi with a Bangladeshi national. Investigators are examining whether he had any links to extremist networks or any communication with Alam.

The NIA has not yet issued an official statement on the charges against Alam or clarified the nature of his alleged links to extremist activity.
