The Jammu and Kashmir government has disclosed that 631 outsiders have purchased land in the Union Territory since the abrogation of Article 370 in August 2019, the move that ended the region’s special status and allowed non-residents to buy property there for the first time in decades.
According to official data revealed in response to Government Question No. 286, tabled by Sheikh Ahsan Ahmed, land worth more than ₹130 crore has been acquired by non-locals across Jammu and Kashmir.
In the Jammu region, 378 non-residents have bought around 212 kanal, 13 marla, and 128 square feet of land, valued at nearly ₹90.48 crore. In the Kashmir region, 253 outsiders have purchased 173 kanal and 7 marla of land worth ₹39.49 crore.
The data marks the first official confirmation of property transactions by non-residents since the constitutional changes of October 2019, which scrapped the restrictions that had previously reserved land ownership for permanent residents of Jammu and Kashmir.
