Independent MP from Purnea, Rajesh Ranjan, popularly known as Pappu Yadav, was admitted to Patna Medical College and Hospital on Saturday, a day after his arrest by Bihar Police in connection with a 1995 forgery case. Doctors said he was brought in for medical examination after he complained of health issues following his detention.
Pappu Yadav was arrested late Friday night from his residence in Patna’s Mandiri area after a court order related to a decades-old case. The arrest led to high drama outside his house as police teams arrived to execute the order and his supporters gathered in large numbers, resulting in heated arguments and brief scuffles.
According to police officials, the MP MLA Special Court had ordered the attachment of property against Pappu Yadav and two others in a case linked to alleged forgery and misuse of a rented house. The case dates back to 1995 and was registered at the Gardanibagh police station. The complaint alleged that a house rented from Vinod Bihari Lal was later projected as an office of a Member of Parliament without proper consent.
Officials said the court had issued arrest warrants and proclamations earlier, but the accused failed to appear repeatedly. Special Judge Praveen Kumar Malviya passed the attachment order after the continued absence of the accused. The next hearing in the case is scheduled for Saturday.
Speaking to the media during the arrest, Pappu Yadav accused the police of acting forcefully and without following due process. He said, “I had just returned from the Lok Sabha session when a man in plain clothes entered my house and said he was an inspector. I was told there was a warrant, but no document was shown to me. I only asked for time to speak to my lawyer.”
He alleged that the action against him was politically motivated. “I am being targeted for raising sensitive issues like the recent death of a NEET aspirant and the safety of girl students. My life is in danger,” he claimed. He appealed to the Lok Sabha Speaker, Union Home Minister Amit Shah, Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar and Deputy Chief Minister Samrat Choudhary to intervene. He also requested house arrest and assured that he would appear before the court.
Police officials, however, denied the allegations and said they were only following court instructions. A senior officer said, “The court has issued an order for attachment of property and further action. We are executing the order strictly as per law.”
Supporters of Pappu Yadav strongly reacted to his arrest and alleged political vendetta. One of his supporters said, “Whenever he raises issues related to Bihar, education or justice, he is targeted. His health condition is also not stable, and multiple doctors are attending to him.” Another supporter questioned the timing of the arrest during an ongoing Parliament session and called it unacceptable.
