Tensions have escalated in Patna after a student leader burned the Manusmriti during a protest at Patna University, triggering outrage and a series of threats on social media.
The incident took place during a student gathering at Patna College, where protests were being held in support of implementing University Grants Commission regulations.
Former Patna University Students’ Union president Manish Kumar reportedly set fire to the Manusmriti on stage while addressing a crowd.
“This country will run by the Constitution, not by the Manusmriti,” he said during the protest, as seen in videos circulating online.
Threats Against Quran and Prophet Spark Outrage
Following the incident, a man identified as Madhav Lal from Nalanda allegedly released a video threatening to burn the Quran across Bihar and made derogatory remarks about Prophet Muhammad and his companions.
“I want to tell the Bihar Police to arrest Manish Yadav within the next 24 hours. If it’s not done, we will burn the Quran at every crossroads in Bihar. Not only that, we will burn effigies of Mohammad, Ali, and Abu Bakar instead of Ravan,” Madhav says in a video.
Protest Over UGC Rules Intensifies
The developments come amid ongoing protests by students over UGC related demands. On March 18, protesters marched towards Dak Bungalow Chowk in Patna, where they attempted to break police barricades.
The demonstration led to traffic disruptions as students sat on the road. A large police presence was deployed at the site, including water cannons and security vehicles, to control the situation.
