A tragic incident has raised serious concerns over campus safety after a 20-year-old student died at Tolani Maritime Institute in Pune on Sunday morning. The student, identified as Vishal Verma, was undergoing training at the institute and had stepped out for exercise around 7:20 am.
According to initial reports, Verma was performing pull-ups on a basketball hoop when the iron structure supporting the rim suddenly gave way. The entire frame collapsed and fell directly onto his head, causing severe injuries.
Fellow students and staff immediately rushed to help him and took him to a nearby hospital in Talegaon. However, doctors declared him dead on arrival due to critical head injuries and heavy bleeding.
Police Probe Underway
Officials from the Ambi MIDC police station reached the spot soon after the incident and initiated a preliminary investigation. Authorities are examining whether the collapse was due to structural weakness, rusting, or faulty installation of the equipment.
A case has been registered, and further investigation is ongoing to determine responsibility.
Outrage Over Safety Standards
The incident has sparked outrage among students and parents, who have raised serious questions about the maintenance of sports infrastructure at the institute. Many have demanded accountability and stricter safety checks to prevent such accidents.
The institute administration described the incident as “deeply tragic” and said a detailed inquiry would be conducted.
This tragedy is not an isolated case. In recent years, similar accidents have been reported across the country. In Rohtak, a 16-year-old national-level player died after a basketball pole collapsed during practice. Another fatal incident occurred in Bahadurgarh involving a similar structure failure.
