Congress leader and Lok Sabha Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi on Monday met Deepak Kumar, popularly known as “Mohammad Deepak,” the Uttarakhand gym owner who intervened to protect a 70-year-old Muslim shopkeeper from harassment by Bajrang Dal activists in Kotdwar. The meeting came nearly a month after the January 26 incident, which went viral on social media.
Heroic Stand Against Intimidation
Deepak had confronted a mob targeting the shop, named Baba School Dress and Matching Centre, over the use of the word “Baba,” which the activists claimed was a Hindu term. In the heated exchange, Deepak sarcastically introduced himself as “Mohammad Deepak,” a moment that became widely shared online.
Rahul Gandhi, praising his courage, said, “Every human being is equal. This is Indianness, this is the shop of love [mohobbat ki dukaan].” The Congress leader added that Deepak’s bravery sets an example of unity, brotherhood, and courage that should inspire young people across the country.
Assurance and Support
Speaking after the meeting, Deepak said, “Rahul ji had called me here today. He spoke to my wife and family and assured me that what I did was good and that I should not have any fear. He also said he would travel to Kotdwar and take membership in my gym. It will be a matter of great happiness for me if he comes to my gym.”

He further added, “Today, the situation in Kotdwar is better than before. Rahul ji made me meet Sonia ji as well. I have nothing to do with politics. It is good to know that someone understands that I raised my voice for humanity.”
Fallout and Public Attention
Following the incident, Deepak’s gym, Hulk Gym, saw a sharp drop in members from 150 to 15 after locals allegedly boycotted him for confronting the mob. Senior Supreme Court advocates and public figures have since stepped in to support him, helping him sustain his business.
The Uttarakhand police also registered an FIR against a man who allegedly announced a ₹2 lakh reward for killing Deepak. The complaint, filed under Section 351(3) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), cited threats on social media, which had left Deepak and his family living in fear.
Rahul Gandhi’s visit is being seen as a strong gesture of solidarity for those standing against communal intimidation.
