Tension has been reported in Ahilyanagar after videos from a Ram Navami procession surfaced online, triggering outrage and calls for action.
The clips, recorded during celebrations on March 27, show a young man wearing a saffron scarf smiling while symbolically releasing an arrow towards a nearby mosque. The act was cheered by people present at the procession, raising concerns about communal sensitivity.
Several individuals seen in the videos have been identified by locals as Vishal, Piyush Manocha, Akash Atul, Sonu Dhadade, and Swapnil Anil. However, there has been no official confirmation from authorities regarding their involvement.
Criticism Over Route and Conduct
Critics have questioned the decision to take the procession route close to a mosque and described the act as provocative. Many said such gestures during religious events could hurt sentiments and disturb communal harmony.
The videos have sparked strong reactions on social media, with users demanding strict action against those involved and questioning the role of organisers in ensuring peaceful celebrations.
Stone Pelting Incident Adds to Tension
In a related development, tension also escalated in Shrirampur city during a Ram Navami procession after stone pelting was reported. The incident occurred when a procession moving towards a temple reached a dargah area, where sudden stone throwing led to panic among participants.
Two people were reportedly injured in the incident and were taken to hospital for treatment.
Local residents have made conflicting claims, with some alleging that the stone pelting began from the procession side, while others claimed it originated from the nearby area.
Police Deploy Forces, Appeal for Calm
Police said the situation is currently under control and heavy security has been deployed in sensitive areas. State Reserve Police Force personnel have been stationed to prevent any further escalation.
Authorities have registered a case against a cleric linked to the dargah and around 12 unidentified persons. Officials said CCTV footage is being examined to identify those involved in the violence.
Police have urged citizens to maintain peace and avoid spreading rumours. “Strict action will be taken against anyone sharing inflammatory or misleading content on social media,” officials said.
