After deadly clashes over a court-ordered survey of the Shahi Jama Masjid, which led to four deaths, the Sambhal district administration has started a campaign to “remove encroachments and target illegal power theft” in the area surrounding the historic mosque.
On Sunday morning, the administration began clearing encroachments in the Nakhasa police station area, close to the residence of Samajwadi Party MP Zia ur Rehman Barq.
Additional Superintendent of Police (ASP) Shrish Chandra said, “The operation focuses on clearing drains outside houses and shops. This will help restore public spaces and improve drainage.” The drive uncovered an illegal stockpile of 25 domestic gas cylinders at the house of Haji Rabban, according to the police.
Supply Inspector Yogesh Shukla shared, “The family claimed the cylinders were for a wedding, but they couldn’t provide documents. The cylinders were confiscated, and we will file an FIR.”
Meanwhile, the electricity department said it also carried out a raid in Deepa Sarai, uncovering illegal power connections in four mosques and a madrasa. Executive Engineer Naveen Gautam stated, “A total of 130 kilowatts of electricity, worth about Rs 1.25 crore, were being stolen. We have identified 49 individuals involved, and FIRs will be filed against them.”
In another move, the Bhasma Shankar temple was reopened by the district administration on Saturday, allowing worshippers to resume prayers. Mahant Acharya Vinod Shukla said, “Devotees are visiting the temple, offering prayers, and reciting the Hanuman Chalisa. We have ensured its safety with PAC personnel on duty.” Local resident Mohit Rastogi expressed his gratitude, saying, “I had heard about this temple from my grandfather. I thank the administration for reopening it so we can reconnect with our heritage.”
District Magistrate Rajender Pensiya said, “These actions are part of a broader effort to restore order and address illegal activities in the area around the Shahi Jama Masjid.”
