The Electricity Department has imposed a fine of Rs 1.91 crore on Zia Ur Rehman, the Lok Sabha MP from Sambhal, for alleged electricity theft at his residence. In addition to the fine, the department also disconnected the power supply to his house. This development follows a police case filed on Thursday against the Samajwadi Party MP under Section 135 of the Electricity Act, 2003, for theft of electricity.

Zia Ur Rehman’s father, Mamlukur Rehman Barq, was also booked for allegedly threatening electricity department officials during an inspection at their residence in the Deepa Sarai area. Barq reportedly obstructed the inspection and verbally abused the engineers, even telling them, “The dispensation will change and we will ruin you.” This incident was captured on video by the electricity department.

According to the FIR filed by the Electricity Department, an inspection team found evidence of power theft at the MP’s residence. The team discovered that the electricity meters had been bypassed, confirming the illegal use of power. During the inspection, which was carried out amid heavy security on Thursday morning, it was found that Zia Ur Rehman’s residence, which had two 2-kilowatt connections (one in his name and another in his late grandfather’s name), had been using a 16.48-kilowatt load. The smart meters installed recently had shown zero consumption over the last six months, further raising suspicion. Upon testing, both meters were found to have been tampered with.
