Samajwadi Party (SP) leader Abdullah Azam Khan walked out of Hardoi jail in Uttar Pradesh on Tuesday after spending 17 months behind bars. Supporters and party leaders, including Moradabad MP Ruchi Veera, gathered outside the prison to welcome him.
Around noon, Abdullah—wearing a white kurta-pyjama and a dark sleeveless waistcoat—was escorted out by security personnel. He did not speak to the media, but his lawyer, Satnam Singh Nattu, expressed gratitude for his release. “Today, we thank God, Allah, Waheguru for paving the way for Abdullah Bhai’s release. He will finally walk free and return home today,” he said.
Abdullah Khan, a former MLA from Suar in Rampur, is the son of veteran SP leader and former state cabinet minister Azam Khan, who remains in Sitapur jail facing multiple cases.
His release followed an order from the MP/MLA special magistrate trial court, which granted him bail in a 2020 case related to enemy property. Over the years, 45 cases, including one for machine theft, have been filed against him, and he has secured bail in all of them. However, procedural delays in bail verification postponed his release.
Veera welcomed the decision, saying, “We had confidence in the judiciary before, and we still do. Justice has been served, and we are grateful.”
