Lady Shri Ram College for Women has shifted classes online for Wednesday after a 17-year-old girl was allegedly gang-raped at Aastha Kunj Park near Kalkaji Mandir on Monday evening.
The college, located around 2 kilometres from the park, cancelled regular classes from noon on Tuesday following the incident and asked students, faculty and staff to avoid gathering near the back gate area.
Three men were arrested on Tuesday in connection with the alleged rape. Police said one of the accused was injured after a brief exchange of fire with police.
College Seeks More Police Patrolling
LSR Principal Kanika K Ahuja said the college took the decision to move classes online after learning about the incident.
“After we got to know about the unfortunate incident, we cancelled classes. The safety, security and well-being of our students is of paramount importance to us,” Ahuja said.
She said the college was in contact with Delhi Police and had requested increased patrolling around the campus.
The college has specifically asked the Amar Colony police station to increase patrols in the lanes around the campus, particularly near the back gate and parks in the area.
Ahuja also said faculty mentors and the college counsellor would remain available for students who needed support.
Students Raise Concerns Over Safety
The incident has raised concerns among students about safety in and around the college.
LSR Students’ Union president Anusha Garg said authorities should move beyond general safety advisories and identify specific areas where students may be vulnerable.
“Women’s safety needs to move from generic advisories to location specific safety audits,” Garg said.
She called for authorities to identify stretches frequently used by students between campuses, Metro stations, bus stops, paying guest accommodations and markets.
She also suggested checking lighting, visibility, last mile transport, emergency access and police patrols in these areas.
The college said it would continue coordinating with Delhi Police and take further measures to strengthen security around the campus.
