Srinagar Police has filed a case against participants of the 8th Muharram procession on MA Road, accusing them of violating agreed terms and trying to disturb public order.

In a statement released Friday, a police spokesperson said, “Despite clear guidelines, certain participants engaged in deliberate and unlawful acts. These actions aimed to disrupt public order and communal harmony, posing a threat to national security.”

An FIR (No. 41/2025) has been registered at Police Station Kothibagh under the newly introduced Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), replacing the Indian Penal Code.

Police said they have already identified the individuals involved and legal action is in progress.

“We are committed to maintaining peace and stability. Strict action will be taken against anyone who tries to provoke unrest or threaten communal harmony,” the statement added.

Muharram processions in Kashmir have long been tightly controlled, with restrictions in place since the 1990s. Though recent years have seen some easing, tensions often remain during the observances.

This year’s 8th Muharram procession passed through MA Road after years of partial relaxation.
