Stone-Pelting During Muharram in UP’s Kushinagar Injures 8-Year-Old; Police Restore Calm

Kushinagar Muharram

Tensions flared in parts of Uttar Pradesh’s Kushinagar district on Sunday during Muharram processions, leading to stone-pelting and injuries, including to an 8-year-old boy named Akhlaq. Authorities say the situation is now under control.

In Gulharia village, under the Khadda police station, a Muharram procession was reportedly disrupted after some locals objected to the display of religious flags and slogans near a temple. While allegations were made that some participants shouted provocative slogans, police say these claims are still being verified.

“A few people tried to create trouble, but police reached on time and brought the situation under control,” said Inspector Anil Kumar of Khadda Police Station. “Some people have been taken into custody. There is no need for panic.”

The procession was otherwise peaceful, with most participants engaged in mourning rituals.

In a separate incident in Tekuatar market, under Ramkola police station, a dispute over DJ music during the procession escalated into a clash between members of two communities. During the chaos, 8-year-old Akhlaq was struck on the head and injured.

“Akhlaq is stable and receiving care,” a local doctor confirmed.

Eyewitnesses said the violence started over a misunderstanding. Some members of the Muslim community alleged they were attacked by individuals associated with local Hindu groups.

“This procession has always happened peacefully,” said Mohammad Irfan, a resident. “We request everyone not to spread rumours or share provocative videos.”

Prominent voices from both Hindu and Muslim communities urged people to remain calm and united.

“We must not let a few people break the peace we have shared for years,” said Sunil Mishra, a shopkeeper from Ramkola.

Police have increased force deployment in sensitive areas and are monitoring social media to prevent the spread of misinformation.

“Our officers are working around the clock,” said SP Vinay Kumar Singh. “No one will be allowed to disturb the peace. All claims are being investigated.”

Muharram, the first month of the Islamic calendar, is observed by Muslims to mourn the martyrdom of Imam Hussain. Across Uttar Pradesh, many processions continue peacefully, reflecting the spirit of Ganga-Jamuni Tehzeeb — a long-standing tradition of Hindu-Muslim unity.
