The Bihar Police have arrested four more accused in connection with the murder of 25-year-old Shahzad Ali in Siwan district, taking the total number of arrests in the case to five. Authorities said raids are continuing to apprehend the remaining accused.

Shahzad Ali, a resident of Shivrajpur village under Barharia police station limits in Siwan district, was allegedly lynched by a mob on May 30, 2026. According to allegations made by his family and the FIR lodged by his wife, Mobina Khatoon, Shahzad was taken away by a group of villagers and brutally assaulted, leading to his death.

Following the incident, the Superintendent of Police (SP), Siwan, along with the Sub-Divisional Police Officer (SDPO), Sadar-01, and a forensic team visited the crime scene, collected evidence, and launched an investigation. Barharia police station registered Case No. 230/28 against seven named accused and several unidentified persons.

Five Arrested So Far

Police said a Special Investigation Team (SIT) was formed under the leadership of the SDPO, Sadar-01. Based on technical surveillance and local intelligence, one accused was initially arrested and sent to judicial custody. Subsequent investigations led to the arrest of four additional accused.

Police stated that efforts are underway to arrest the remaining suspects and assured that the case would be pursued through a speedy trial.

Police Officer Suspended

During a review of the case, the SP found serious negligence on the part of police personnel deployed under Dial-112 service.

According to the police statement, Sub-Inspector Sanjeev Kumar received information on May 30 that villagers in Shivrajpur had detained a suspected thief. However, instead of rescuing the man from the mob and taking him into protective custody, he allegedly left him among the crowd without taking legal action.

Police said Shahzad Ali was later assaulted by the mob and died from his injuries.

Following preliminary inquiry, SI Sanjeev Kumar was suspended with immediate effect for negligence, indiscipline, and dereliction of duty. His headquarters during suspension has been assigned to Police Lines, Siwan.

The SP has also recommended cancellation of contracts of two Home Guards, Nandji Yadav and Muktinath, who were deployed with the Dial-112 team at the time of the incident. Additionally, an explanation has been sought within 24 hours from Barharia SHO Chhotan Kumar.

Family Alleges Mob Lynching

According to Shahzad’s wife, Mobina Khatoon, several men came to their house and took Shahzad away before beating him to death.

“He was beaten by around five or six people. They took my husband away and killed him,” she alleged.

Shahzad’s sister-in-law, Naseema Khatun, also alleged that he was attacked while travelling on a motorcycle.

In the FIR, Mobina Khatoon accused the assailants of tying Shahzad to a tree and assaulting him with sticks, kicks, and punches. She also alleged that ₹5,000 in cash was taken from him during the attack.

The FIR names Amit Chaudhary alias Avadhesh Chaudhary, Pramendra Manjhi, Chhatthu Manjhi, Avadh Kishore Chaudhary, Guddu Manjhi, Ranjan Chaudhary, and Mantu Kumar, among others, as accused in the case.

Family Says This Is the Second Death

The family says the tragedy comes just months after the suspicious death of Shahzad’s elder brother, Naushad Ali, who was allegedly found hanging from a tree around two-and-a-half months ago.

Relatives claim Naushad was also murdered. With both brothers dead, the family says two widowed women and several children have been left without support.

Police have appealed to the public not to spread unverified information and warned that strict legal action will be taken against those circulating misleading content online.
