‘Those Born to Eat Biryani Are Animals’: Himanta Sarma’s Remark Triggers Row Ahead of Nagaon Bypoll

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Thursday made a controversial remark about biryani while responding to Congress MP Rakibul Hussain’s earlier comment that God had sent him into the world to enjoy the dish.

Addressing a public rally in Juria in the Nagaon Lok Sabha constituency, Sarma said, “Those who are born to drink mother’s milk are human beings, and those born to eat biryani are animals.”

The exchange comes ahead of the October 6 Nagaon Lok Sabha bypoll, with Sarma campaigning for BJP candidate Devasish Sharma.

Sarma and Rakibul Hussain Trade Remarks

Sarma and Rakibul Hussain have exchanged remarks during the bypoll campaign.

Earlier, Sarma had referred to the Congress leader as “Bakasura”, a demon from Hindu mythology known for his appetite, and accused him of “gobbling up” funds meant for government schemes.

In response, Hussain, the Congress MP from Dhubri, had sarcastically said that God had sent him into the world to eat biryani.

Sarma also criticised Congress MLA Nurul Huda, whose Rupohihat Assembly constituency falls within the Nagaon Lok Sabha seat.

The Chief Minister accused Huda of failing to contribute to the development of schools, colleges and roads and alleged that government schemes had not reached women in the constituency as promised.

“A tap was promised in every house, but water never flowed out of it,” Sarma said, adding that local residents were left with “pipes and promises”.

“Nagaon has seen through the deception, and this time it will answer at the EVM,” he said.

Sarma Claims BJP Will Win Nagaon Bypoll

Campaigning for BJP candidate Devasish Sharma, Sarma also made a claim about the expected result of the bypoll.

“Today, across the Nagaon Lok Sabha constituency, I addressed three huge rallies. My reading from the ground is that the people who have voted for Congress in some pockets have realised that the only party that can deliver good governance is BJP and it is sweeping the bypoll,” he said.

Sarma added that the BJP campaign had received support from women and other voters across the constituency.

The Chief Minister also asked AIUDF chief and MLA Badruddin Ajmal to retire from active politics, saying he should hand over responsibility to one of his three sons.

He further alleged that the Congress and AIUDF were working together, either directly or indirectly.

Nagaon Bypoll on October 6

The Nagaon Lok Sabha bypoll will be held on October 6, with counting scheduled for October 9.

The election was necessitated after former Congress MP Pradyut Bordoloi left the party shortly before the Assam Assembly election and joined the BJP. He subsequently contested and won from the Dispur Assembly constituency.

The BJP has fielded Devasish Sharma in the Nagaon bypoll.
