TMC Leader Rezzak Khan Shot and Hacked to Death in South 24 Parganas; Tensions Rise in Bhangar

Rezzak Khan, a local leader of the Trinamool Congress (TMC), was brutally murdered on Thursday night in the Chaltaberia area of South 24 Parganas district, West Bengal. The 38-year-old leader was attacked while returning home from a party meeting.

According to police, the attack happened around 9:45 pm near a canal in Siristala, just 500 meters from Khan’s home in Chak Maricha village. He was shot multiple times and then hacked with sharp weapons by a group of unknown assailants. Despite efforts to save him, Khan was declared dead at the hospital.

“He was shot and attacked with sharp weapons. We rushed him to the hospital, but it was too late,” said a police officer at the scene. The area falls under Uttar Kashipore police station, and Kolkata Police Commissioner Manoj Verma visited the spot on Friday. An investigation is underway, and the body has been sent for post-mortem.

Khan was the TMC president in the Chaltaberia area of Bhangar and a close aide of Saokat Mollah, the TMC MLA from Canning East. His murder has triggered political unrest in the region.

MLA Saokat Mollah blamed the Indian Secular Front (ISF) for the killing. “This was done by ISF goons under the direction of their MLA, Naushad Siddiqui. Rezzak was a loyal worker of TMC. We want strict action against the murderers,” he told reporters.

The ISF, however, denied any role in the murder.

As the investigation continues, tension remains high in the area. TMC leaders have demanded immediate justice. “This is not just a murder. It’s an attack on democracy,” said a local TMC worker.

The police have promised to track down the culprits. “A probe is ongoing. Multiple attackers were involved,” a police official confirmed.
