“Traitor, Gaddar, Deshdrohi”: Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri Faces Vile Abuse Over India-Pakistan Ceasefire

India’s Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri, a veteran diplomat with decades of service, has become the target of intense online abuse after India agreed to a ceasefire arrangement with Pakistan. A section of right-wing social media users erupted in anger, targeting not just Misri but also his family—digging up an old tweet he had posted nearly a decade ago to justify their outrage.

What shocked many observers was the deeply personal nature of the attacks. Misri’s daughters were dragged into the controversy, with several accounts hurling insults and questioning their citizenship.

One user, Sanjukta (@Rimoru121145), wrote, “Traitor, Gaddar, Deshdrohi! You made your offsprings settle outside of India before prostrating and offering your head to Pakistan. Shameful, absolutely shameful.”

Another user, @ScathingSamosa, went even further, tweeting, “You’re a pathetic sack of shit Misri. A weak, wimpy traitor. F*ck you.”

The anger was triggered by Misri’s recent remarks urging Pakistan to honour the ceasefire agreement. “Vikram Misri bol rahe Pakistan ko zimmedari samjhe aur ceasefire ka ullanghan na kare,” tweeted @ShivamMish78313, mocking his statement and calling it an act of “kayarta,” or cowardice.

Some users, however, stood up against the wave of abuse. Sherbir Panag (@Sherbir) condemned the trend, saying, “We fail as a nation not because of ceasefires but when our only response is to abuse women. Look at the absolute garbage (in the comments) we are throwing at Mr Misri and his family. Disgusting.”

Another user, Jayati (@Jayati_M93), pointed out a deeper issue: “Sanghis have found another woman to blame, this time Vikram Misri’s daughter. Also, it’s funny how they expect people to believe that it’s babus to blame for the current approach and not the political leadership.”

Vikram Misri, who has served India in various high-level diplomatic roles including as Ambassador to China, Spain, and Myanmar, became Foreign Secretary in July 2024. He has also worked closely with three Prime Ministers—Inder Kumar Gujral, Manmohan Singh, and Narendra Modi—as Private Secretary.

Born in Srinagar and educated at Hindu College and XLRI Jamshedpur, Misri is one of India’s most experienced diplomats. His recent involvement in managing the India-Pakistan military tensions has placed him in the spotlight.
