A 55-year-old man was arrested in West Tripura district for allegedly raping a 15-year-old girl he called his granddaughter, then poisoning her in an attempt to kill her. The survivor is recovering at Agartala’s GBP Hospital where doctors say her condition is stable.
Police said the accused, who lived in the same neighborhood and was known to the victim as “daadu” (grandfather), lured her to an abandoned room on Friday morning. “He beat her until she fell unconscious, then raped her and forced her to consume poison,” an officer stated.
The attacker fled but was arrested at midnight following a police search. “We’ve charged him with rape and attempted murder under the POCSO Act,” the officer confirmed. The accused will be presented in court on Saturday.
Agartala Mayor Dipak Majumder visited the survivor in hospital, demanding strict punishment. “Our administration will ensure justice in this horrific case,” he said.
This incident follows several recent child sexual assault cases in Tripura, including last month’s arrest of an auto-rickshaw driver for harassing a minor and the August detention of two men for raping a 16-year-old. In a separate May case, a man received 20 years imprisonment for repeatedly raping a school student.
(The survivor’s identity is protected as per POCSO guidelines)
