‘Udaipur Files’ Could Damage India’s Global Image, Warns Jamiat Chief Arshad Madani

Jamiat Ulama-i-Hind president Maulana Arshad Madani has warned that the film ‘Udaipur Files’, based on the 2022 murder of Udaipur tailor Kanhaiya Lal, spreads hatred and threatens communal harmony. He has appealed to the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting to revoke the film’s clearance.

The appeal follows a Delhi High Court directive asking the ministry to reconsider the censor certificate. Madani argues the film could incite violence and embarrass India internationally, much like the global backlash over Nupur Sharma’s remarks in 2022.

Despite 55 scenes being reportedly removed, the Jamiat says the film still promotes division. The filmmaker, Amit Jani, is accused in the petition of having a history of incitement.

Senior advocate Kapil Sibal is representing the Jamiat, and a caveat has also been filed in the Supreme Court.

The Ministry has one week to respond, and the film remains banned until a decision is made.
