UK Hindu Community Moves High Court Against Sale of Temple Complex to Muslim Organisation

A legal dispute has emerged in the United Kingdom over the proposed sale of a 40-year-old temple and community centre in Peterborough to a Muslim organisation.

The controversy centres on the New England Complex, which houses a temple run by the Bharat Hindu Samaj and serves as a religious and cultural hub for thousands of Hindus in the city. Peterborough City Council decided to sell the property to the United Kingdom Islamic Mission following an auction.

Opposing the decision, Bharat Hindu Samaj has approached the High Court, alleging that the council failed to properly consider the temple’s long-standing religious and community role before approving the sale.

High Court Reviewing Decision-Making Process

According to the Hindu organisation, the council overlooked the temple’s nearly 40-year history as a place of worship and community gathering. It has also alleged serious flaws in the way the auction bids were assessed.

In February 2026, the High Court granted an interim order preventing the council from completing the sale while the matter is under judicial review.

The court is now examining whether the council followed the law and proper procedures while deciding to sell the property.

Bharat Hindu Samaj has clarified that its legal challenge is not directed against the United Kingdom Islamic Mission but against the council’s decision-making process.

Temple Serves Around 4,000 Hindus

The organisation says the temple is the only Hindu religious and community centre serving around 4,000 Hindus living in Peterborough and nearby areas.

It argues that if the complex is lost, worshippers would have to travel to the nearest temples in Cambridge, about 56 kilometres away, or Leicester, around 64 kilometres away, for religious services and festivals.

According to the organisation, the complex functions not only as a temple but also as a centre for cultural and community activities.

Council Property Sales Amid Financial Pressure

The Peterborough dispute comes as several local councils across the UK are selling public properties to deal with growing financial pressures.

Facing rising costs and reduced government funding, many councils have been disposing of community buildings, sports centres and other public assets to balance their budgets.

According to the Bharat Hindu Samaj, the issue is not simply about which bidder offered the highest price but about protecting a long-established religious and community institution.

The organisation has alleged that errors were made in evaluating and scoring the bids and claimed that council members approved the recommendations without adequately reviewing the assessment.

The High Court will now decide whether the sale process complied with legal requirements and principles of fairness before the transaction can proceed.
