The Uttar Pradesh Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS) has arrested four men accused of plotting to overthrow the elected government and carry out attacks on Hindu religious leaders.

The suspects, identified as Akmal Raza from Sultanpur, Safeel Salmani alias Ali Razvi from Sonbhadra, Mohammad Tausif from Kanpur, and Qasim Ali from Rampur, were allegedly planning to form a radical organisation called the Mujahideen Army to impose Sharia law in India.

ATS officials said the group was preparing for violent activities and trying to recruit members through social media platforms.

Authorities said they received intelligence suggesting that people from various districts in Uttar Pradesh were influenced by extremist organisations in Pakistan and were planning to use arms to topple the democratically elected government.

The arrested individuals are now under investigation as police probe the extent of the alleged conspiracy.
