The Uttar Pradesh government has directed medical and dental colleges across the state to set up special monitoring cells to prevent alleged cases related to religious conversion on campuses. The move comes after concerns were raised over incidents reported at King George’s Medical University (KGMU) and the Post Graduate Institute (PGI).
Governor and Chancellor Anandiben Patel has issued instructions to strengthen surveillance and preventive mechanisms in all higher medical institutions under her jurisdiction.
Following these directions, Atal Bihari Vajpayee Medical University has instructed all its affiliated colleges to establish dedicated “conversion prevention cells” and submit compliance reports.
Special Cells to Monitor and Raise Awareness
According to the university directive, each medical and dental college will form a dedicated cell that will monitor suspicious activities, while also focusing on awareness among students, resident doctors, and staff members.
Officials said the aim is to ensure a “safe and healthy environment” within educational institutions and to take action on any complaint strictly as per rules.

A senior official stated that the cells will not only function as monitoring units but will also conduct awareness programmes to inform students about institutional rules, legal rights, and responsibilities.
Reports to Be Sent to Governor Every Three Months
King George’s Medical University spokesperson Dr K.K. Singh said a team of 10 to 15 senior doctors will be formed under the new system.
He said, “A team of 10 to 15 specialist doctors will be created, and they will submit reports to the Governor every three months.”
Dr Singh also said that awareness programmes will be organised regularly, especially focusing on students who may be more vulnerable in such situations.
He added that in many reported cases, “minor girls are often the victims,” and therefore targeted awareness efforts will be conducted to prevent exploitation.
Statewide Implementation Across Medical Institutions
Officials confirmed that the initiative will be implemented in a structured manner across Uttar Pradesh’s medical institutions.
The administration said the objective is to strengthen internal vigilance systems and ensure quick response to complaints related to alleged conversion activities.
Authorities believe that coordinated monitoring, combined with awareness drives, will help maintain discipline and safety on campuses while ensuring that institutions remain compliant with regulations.
The directive marks a significant step in expanding administrative oversight in higher education institutions in the state, particularly in the medical education sector.
