UP Woman ‘Injected with HIV’ by In-Laws After Failing to Meet Dowry Demands, Court Directs Action

Representational

A court in Saharanpur has ordered the Uttar Pradesh police to file a criminal case against the in-laws of a 30-year-old woman who alleged that they injected her with an HIV-infected syringe after her parents failed to meet additional dowry demands. Following the court’s direction, the police have registered an FIR against the woman’s husband, brother-in-law, sister-in-law, and mother-in-law under various charges, including attempt to murder, cruelty for dowry, causing harm by administering poison, and criminal breach of trust.

Saharanpur SP (Rural) Sagar Jain confirmed the development. “We have lodged an FIR and are investigating the case thoroughly,” he said.

The woman’s father told the court that his daughter got married in February 2023, and the family spent around ₹45 lakh on the wedding, including giving a sub-compact SUV and ₹15 lakh in cash to the groom’s family. “Despite this, they demanded an additional ₹10 lakh and a bigger SUV,” he said.

He alleged that his daughter was harassed from the very first day of marriage. “They humiliated her and even threatened to get another wife for their son. She was thrown out of her marital home in March 2023 and lived with us for three months until the village panchayat intervened and sent her back. But the abuse continued,” he added.

According to the father, in May 2024, the in-laws allegedly injected his daughter with an HIV-infected syringe, causing her health to deteriorate. “Medical tests confirmed she is HIV-positive, while her husband tested negative,” he claimed.

He also alleged that when they approached the Gangoh police station to file a complaint, the Station House Officer (SHO) asked them to get approval from higher authorities. Even after meeting Saharanpur SSP Rohit Singh Sajwan, no action was taken. Left with no choice, the family moved the court, which has now directed the police to act. SHO Rogent Tyagi has denied the allegations against him.

The investigation is ongoing, and the victim’s family hopes for justice.
