“Fly to India for Free”: US Launches $2,600 Incentive for ‘Illegal Migrants’ with Taj Mahal Campaign

The US Department of Homeland Security launches Project Homecoming, offering undocumented migrants $2,600 and free travel to return home voluntarily.

The United States Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has launched a new program to encourage undocumented migrants to leave the country voluntarily, offering free travel and a financial incentive of up to $2,600.

The initiative, called Project Homecoming, uses the Taj Mahal in its promotional materials to appeal to Indian migrants, alongside images of China and Colombia, countries with large populations in the US. The DHS said the program allows undocumented migrants to depart safely and legally without facing arrest or detention.

How the Program Works

Migrants interested in leaving voluntarily can register through the CBP Home Mobile App. Once their eligibility is verified, they can receive assistance for travel arrangements and a cash payout. DHS officials also said certain fines for failing to leave after a removal order would be waived for participants.

DHS Secretary Kristi Noem said, “If you don’t self-deport, you will face fines, arrest, and formal deportation. This is your chance to leave legally and preserve the opportunity to return in the right way.”

The department described the program as a “historic opportunity” for non-criminal undocumented migrants to depart “as regular travelers—without arrest, detention, or restraints.” Participants can leave for their home country or another nation where they have lawful status, and the app helps them prepare for the move by wrapping up work, school, and personal matters.

Mixed Reactions to the Scheme

The use of the Taj Mahal in the campaign has sparked debate online. Many argue that using a cultural icon to promote deportation trivializes the serious issue of migration. Some social media users questioned the incentive, saying, “Those who have entered illegally and are living a good life in America, why would they want to return for $2,600?” Others defended the program, calling it a helpful option for migrants facing difficult situations.

Immigration advocates have warned that while financial incentives may encourage voluntary departure, the program cannot erase the long-term consequences. Leaving the US under such schemes could affect a migrant’s ability to return legally in the future, depending on their immigration history.

Background

Project Homecoming was introduced a few months after President Donald Trump took office in January 2025. The initiative is part of a broader effort to reduce enforcement costs and ease the burden on detention systems by offering a voluntary alternative to forced deportation.

The DHS has not revealed how many migrants have registered through the app or how long the program will continue.
