On Tuesday, authorities halted the construction of a mosque in Sultanpur village in the Laksar area of Uttarakhand’s Haridwar district, claiming it violated building norms.
District Magistrate Mayur Dikshit acted on the orders of Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami, who had received complaints from local villagers. The complaints alleged that the mosque’s minars (towers) were around 250 feet tall, which they claimed went against construction guidelines.
Local Hindu groups had raised concerns about the height of the religious structure. After receiving their complaints, CM Dhami directed the District Magistrate to look into the matter and submit a report.
This move comes as part of a broader push by the BJP-led state government, which has already demolished over 500 “illegal mazars” (shrines) across Uttarakhand in recent months.
