Police in Uttarakhand have arrested Mufti Mujeeb over remarks he allegedly made during a programme held as part of the Eid-e-Milad celebrations.
Mujeeb had reportedly questioned the Uttarakhand government’s decision to shut down madrassas deemed illegal and warned the authorities against taking such action. A video of his remarks later circulated on social media, following which Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami took a strong position on the matter.
Mufti Mujeeb’s Remarks
According to reports, Mujeeb made the remarks during a programme at Trishul Chowk held in connection with the Procession-e-Mohammadi.
While speaking about the government’s action against allegedly illegal madrassas, he said, “Don’t decide about madrassas. Remember, if madrassas are closed then you see what we will do.”
The video of the speech subsequently went viral, drawing attention from the state government and police.
Police Arrest and Investigation
Police later arrested Mujeeb and sent him to jail. According to the police, he is a resident of Dadhiyal Tanda in Uttar Pradesh’s Rampur district.
The police are also investigating the circumstances surrounding the programme where the remarks were made.
Officials are seeking information about whether permission had been obtained to organise the programme and set up the stage. They are also identifying the people who attended the event and those who addressed the gathering.
Police are examining the video that circulated on social media as part of the investigation. A forensic examination is also being carried out to establish the authenticity and contents of the video.
Mayor Backs Government Action
Rudrapur Municipal Corporation Mayor Vikas Sharma welcomed Mujeeb’s arrest and described it as evidence of the state government’s firm approach.
Sharma said the arrest showed that the Dhami government would not allow anyone to disturb the communal atmosphere in Uttarakhand.
