A video from Uttarakhand’s Chamoli district has sparked controversy after members of the Bajrang Dal allegedly harassed a Muslim teacher who was teaching Arabic to a child at a private residence in Joshimath. The teacher was accused of operating an “illegal madrasa,” although there has been no official confirmation of any violation.
According to videos circulating on social media, Bajrang Dal members gathered outside the house and demanded that the local administration inspect the premises. They questioned the teacher and urged officials to take action if any rules had been violated.
The incident has drawn criticism online, with many social media users arguing that even if an unregistered educational institution was operating, it was the responsibility of the authorities to investigate the matter in accordance with the law. Several users also questioned why private religious instruction inside a home was being treated as a law-and-order issue.
Many users expressed concern over private citizens taking it upon themselves to investigate or enforce the law, saying that only the administration has the authority to determine whether any legal violation has occurred. Others argued that individuals have the right to provide or receive lawful education in a private setting and that any allegations should be examined through due legal process rather than public confrontation.
The incident also triggered a wider debate on the freedom to teach and learn Arabic and Islamic studies. Some users questioned the role of private groups in confronting the teacher, while others said the matter should have been left entirely to the police and district administration.
As of now, the Uttarakhand administration and the police have not issued any official statement regarding the incident. It also remains unclear whether any inquiry has been initiated or whether any legal action has been taken.
Further details are expected to emerge after the authorities examine the matter.
