The Uttarakhand government has directed authorities to take action against unrecognised madrasas operating in the state and ensure that students enrolled in institutions facing closure are admitted to nearby government schools.
Chairman of the Uttarakhand State Minority Education Authority, Dr Surjit Singh Gandhi, said all madrasas must obtain registration and government approval in accordance with prescribed educational standards. He said no educational activities would be allowed in institutions operating without the required recognition.
“Registration of madrasas is necessary to ensure transparency, accountability and quality in the education system. Madrasas functioning without approval will not be permitted to continue educational activities, and action will be taken against those violating the rules,” Dr Gandhi said.
Officials directed to complete registration process
Dr Gandhi issued the directions while chairing a meeting attended by education department officials, representatives of concerned departments and madrasa administrators.
He instructed district education officials to contact all madrasa managements, explain the registration process and ensure that eligible institutions complete registration within the prescribed time.
He also appealed to madrasa operators to submit their applications along with all required documents and fulfil the government’s eligibility criteria to avoid administrative or legal action in the future.
Students to be admitted to nearby government schools
The Minority Education Authority chief said students studying in madrasas that have ceased operations should be enrolled in nearby government schools so that their education is not disrupted.
He said the move is aimed at ensuring that children continue their education through the formal schooling system without interruption.
Haridwar has 271 madrasas
During the meeting, Haridwar District Education Officer Abhishek Shukla said there are 271 madrasas operating in the district.According to the official, 47 madrasas have applied for registration, while five have so far received approval.
He said applications from 18 madrasas are scheduled to be considered on July 29, while field inspections are underway for another 24 institutions. Approval will be granted only to those madrasas that meet the prescribed government standards.
