Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami said his government is preparing for the 2027 Assembly elections with confidence, adding that the BJP is aiming for a record third term in the state. In an interview with Narendra Sethi, he said the work done under his leadership has strengthened Uttarakhand’s development and governance model.
Dhami said Uttarakhand’s major growth has taken place during the years the BJP has been in power. “Uttarakhand has completed 25 years. The people of this state have given the BJP the opportunity to serve for nearly 15 of those years. The real development of the state has occurred during these 15 years,” he said. He credited former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee for giving the state an industrial package and said Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s support since 2014 has helped speed up progress. According to him, projects worth over two lakh crore rupees are underway and the state’s economy and per capita income have grown many times since its formation.
When asked about the BJP’s electoral performance, Dhami said the party has won every major election since 2022. “Our government’s performance and the strength of the BJP organization give us a clear edge. The opposition lacks issues. We are set to secure a clear majority in 2027,” he said.
Dhami dismissed criticism that the Uniform Civil Code violates constitutional freedoms. He said the Assembly has full authority to pass laws. “How can any law passed by this Assembly be deemed unconstitutional? Has anyone been stopped from practicing their religious or cultural activities?” he asked. He said such objections are being raised only by “a few rootless professional agitators whose influence exists only on social media”.
On his role within the party structure, Dhami said decisions in the BJP are made collectively. “Every worker holds importance. The people of Uttarakhand gave the BJP a renewed mandate in 2022, and the party entrusted me once again with the responsibility of being the Chief Servant of the state,” he said.
Dhami highlighted steps taken to protect Uttarakhand’s cultural identity, including action against forced religious conversions and illegal religious structures. “Uttarakhand is the sacred land of the Char Dhams. We are resolute in preserving this cultural identity. We aim to maintain the state’s demographic balance,” he said.
On concerns about live-in relationship registration under the Uniform Civil Code, Dhami said it is a small part of the law. “Its primary function is to strengthen the social security of our sisters and daughters. The UCC must be viewed in its entirety,” he said.
Dhami said Uttarakhand has set an example for the country by implementing the UCC. “The demand for a Uniform Civil Code has existed since before Independence. Uttarakhand has implemented it for all citizens as per constitutional provisions. Lakhs of people have registered without any issues. This shows the opposition’s fears were baseless,” he said.
