Kumari Ananthan, veteran Congress leader and former Tamil Nadu Congress president, passed away early Wednesday morning in Chennai due to age-related illness. He was 93.
Ananthan was the father of senior BJP leader and former Telangana Governor Tamilisai Soundararajan.
A towering figure in Tamil Nadu politics, Mr. Ananthan was known for his command over Tamil oratory and deep involvement in public service. He was elected to the Lok Sabha from Nagercoil in 1977 as a candidate of the Janata Party or Congress (Organisation), during a pivotal era in Indian politics post-Emergency.
Over his long political journey, he served as a Member of the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly four times, earning a reputation for being a passionate speaker and committed leader.
His mortal remains will be kept at his daughter’s residence in Saligramam for the public and well-wishers to pay their final respects.
