Former TMC leader Humayun Kabir has announced that he will build a “Babri Masjid” in Murshidabad, and the foundation is scheduled to be laid today. A video has gone viral showing a man carrying bricks on his head and walking towards Beldanga, the site where the mosque is planned. Many Muslim clerics have opposed Kabir’s announcement, saying it could disturb the peace in the area.
In the viral video, a man named Shafikul Islam, a resident of North Barasat, is seen carrying bricks. He says he is taking them to contribute to the mosque’s construction.
Kabir is also expected to lead a major rally, and organisers claim that nearly three lakh people may attend. He has said he will go ahead with the plan “at any cost,” even if it means leaving the party permanently. Kabir chose December 6 for laying the foundation because, in his words, “the Babri Masjid was demolished on this day.”
Security has been tightened across Murshidabad and nearby areas following the announcement. Police officials say they are watching social media and other platforms closely to prevent any disturbance.
Two qazis from Saudi Arabia are expected to attend the programme. According to reports, around 25 bighas of land have been prepared for the gathering, which is expected to draw nearly three lakh people. Kabir earlier warned that if he is stopped from laying the foundation, he will take to the streets with “lakhs of supporters.”
