Polling for Delhi’s 70 Assembly seats began on Wednesday, with voter turnout standing at 8.1% by 9 AM. The election sees a three-way contest between the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), seeking a third consecutive term, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), aiming to unseat the ruling party, and the Congress, hoping for a political revival in the capital.
Over 1.56 crore voters will decide the fate of 699 candidates contesting across 70 constituencies. The election is taking place amid tight security, following an intense campaign marked by debates on governance, corruption, law and order, allegations of voter list tampering, and promises of freebies.
Polling booths opened at 8 AM, with voters trickling in slowly in the initial hours. Election officials expect turnout to rise as the day progresses.
The vote counting is scheduled for February 8, when the results will determine who will govern Delhi for the next five years.
