Nine children lost their lives when a wall collapsed during a religious event at a temple in Shahpur village, Sagar district. The children, aged between 10 and 15, were participating in a “Parthiv Shivling Nirman” event when the wall of an old house fell onto the tent they were under.
The house, the administration said, was about 50 years old and was run down due to heavy rain. The tragedy occurred between 8:30 and 9:00 AM on Sunday. Two children died immediately at the scene, seven succumbed to their injuries at the hospital, and others died en route. Two other children are currently receiving treatment and are reported to be in stable condition.
Earlier this day, in a separate incident in Rewa, four students died when a wall collapsed next to a private school due to heavy rainfall. These incidents raise concerns about the safety of infrastructure in the state, particularly during adverse weather conditions.
Chief Minister Mohan Yadav has said he is pained by the incident. “I hope those injured recover soon. My condolences with families who lost their children. The government will provide each family with an assistance of ₹ 4 lakh,” he said.
President Droupadi Murmu described the incident as “heart-rending”. “May God gives the bereaved families the strength to endure this pain. I hope for the swift recovery of the injured children,” she said in a post on X.
In response to the tragedy, CM Yadav ordered the immediate removal of the district collector, superintendent of police, and sub-divisional magistrate. The transfer orders were issued late Sunday night.
Additionally, Dr. Hariom Bansal, posted at the Shahpur primary health center, also faced suspension on charges of negligence.
