A woman from West Bengal’s South 24 Parganas district was left shocked after allegedly finding nearly ₹100 crore credited to her bank account when she visited a bank to check whether her LPG subsidy had been deposited.
The incident took place in Kundkhali village in the Kultali area, where Kashmira Sheikh, a resident of Kirtankhola, updated her passbook on Saturday after recently booking a cooking gas cylinder.
According to the family, Kashmira expected to see only the LPG subsidy amount in her account. Instead, her passbook showed a balance of ₹99,99,99,997, leaving her and her family stunned.
Her husband, who earns a living through zari (embroidery) work, said the family had no idea how such a huge amount appeared in the account.
Family Says Bank Could Not Explain the Credit
After noticing the unusual balance, the couple immediately approached their local bank branch to report the matter.
According to the family, bank officials did not explain the source of the money and asked them to leave without providing any clarification.
The family further claimed that the account has since been frozen, preventing them from carrying out any transactions, including withdrawing their own savings. They said they have not received any official communication from the bank regarding the unexpected credit.
‘We Are Poor People, I Am Scared’
Speaking to the media, Kashmira Sheikh said she was frightened after seeing the massive balance.
“I don’t know how this money came into my account. I had gone to check whether my cooking gas subsidy had been credited. Instead, I saw this huge amount. The gas delivery person could not explain it. When I went to the bank, the manager also said they could not say anything and asked me to leave. We are poor people who survive through hard work. I am scared,” she said.
No Official Statement Yet
The bank has not issued an official statement on the incident.
It remains unclear whether the nearly ₹100 crore entry was caused by a technical glitch, an accounting error or another issue. The matter is expected to be examined by the bank, while the family awaits clarification and restoration of access to their account.
