AIUDF chief and Nagaon Lok Sabha bypoll candidate Badruddin Ajmal has made a series of sharp remarks against Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, state minister Pijush Hazarika and BJP candidate Debashish Sharma during campaign meetings in Lahorighat.
At a meeting in Borbori, Ajmal said he would “gouge out Himanta’s eyes” so that the Chief Minister could not see people from the Miya community. He also claimed that Sarma and Hazarika would “have to go to Bangladesh”.
Targeting BJP candidate Debashish Sharma, Ajmal said he would “put Debashish Sharma in jail within four months”. He added that Sharma would be forgiven if he “recites the Kalima”.
Ajmal also said, “This doctor, that doctor, Ajmal is the factor,” while addressing supporters.
The remarks come days before polling for the Nagaon Lok Sabha bypoll on October 6.
BJP Candidate Files FIR Against Ajmal
BJP candidate Debashish Sharma has filed an FIR against Ajmal at Nagaon Sadar Police Station, alleging that the AIUDF leader made false and defamatory statements against him during the election campaign.
According to Sharma, Ajmal accused him of being responsible for the death of a woman, identified in the campaign statements as Mumtaz Begum, and allegedly referred to him as a “murderer”.
Sharma rejected the allegations and said they were false.
“Badruddin Ajmal, FIR. He said I am a murderer. He talks about pushback, but there was an order from the court, and an officer has to obey, or else we will get arrested,” Sharma said after filing the complaint.
He also accused Ajmal of making the allegations for electoral purposes and said he would pursue legal action.
Sharma further criticised Ajmal over his campaign promises relating to schools and healthcare, questioning how the proposed improvements would be funded.
The FIR follows an increasingly personal campaign between Ajmal and BJP leaders. Ajmal has previously made other remarks targeting Sharma during the campaign, including saying he would slap him and throw him out if he entered Parliament.
Sarma Takes Aim at Ajmal
The exchange has also involved Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, who has repeatedly targeted Ajmal during the campaign.
On Friday, Sarma said Ajmal had lost political strength with age.
“Badruddin Ajmal has aged. He is no longer a tiger,” Sarma said, questioning whether the AIUDF chief still had the strength to effectively represent Assam in Parliament.
Sarma had earlier suggested that Ajmal step away from active electoral politics and allow younger AIUDF leaders, including his sons, to take forward the party.
Ajmal, a former three-time Lok Sabha MP from Dhubri, is currently an MLA from Binnakandi and is contesting the Nagaon bypoll.
Congress Campaign Faces Protests
The campaign has also seen protests against Congress candidates and leaders.
During a Congress campaign meeting at Hatipara in Rupahihat, protesters raised slogans including “Congress Go Back”, “Gaurav Gogoi Go Back” and “Rakibul Hussain Go Back”. They also raised slogans against Wajed Ali Choudhury, Ripun Bora, Nurul Huda and Congress candidate Sibamoni Bora while displaying black flags.
The incident comes after another confrontation during Congress campaigning in the Nagaon constituency in September. Police had reported that a Congress convoy was confronted by a crowd in the Samaguri area, where black flags and slogans were raised. Congress later alleged that stones were thrown at its vehicles and sought an inquiry.
Three-Way Contest in Nagaon
The Nagaon Lok Sabha bypoll is being contested by BJP’s Debashish Sharma, Congress’s Sibamoni Bora and AIUDF chief Badruddin Ajmal, among other candidates.
The seat fell vacant after former Congress MP Pradyut Bordoloi left the Lok Sabha after winning the Dispur Assembly seat in the 2026 Assam elections.
Polling is scheduled for October 6, with counting of votes on October 9.
