A woman was allegedly gang-raped inside a sleeper bus in Delhi’s Rani Bagh area by the vehicle’s driver and conductor, police sources said on Thursday. Both accused have been arrested and the bus has been seized as part of the investigation.

According to police sources, the incident took place on the night of May 11 when the woman was returning home after finishing work at a factory in Mangolpuri. The survivor, who is married and has three children, lives in a slum cluster in Pitampura.

Woman Allegedly Dragged Into Bus

Police said the woman was walking near the B-Block bus stand in Saraswati Vihar when she approached a man standing near a sleeper bus to ask for the time. The accused allegedly dragged her inside the vehicle, after which she was sexually assaulted by the driver and conductor.

Sources said the bus later moved towards Nangloi while the assault continued. The woman alleged that she was raped for nearly two hours before being thrown out of the vehicle.

An FIR was registered at Rani Bagh police station on May 12 under Sections 64(1) (rape), 70(1) (gang rape), and 3(5) (common intention) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).

Bus Seized, Probe Underway

Police officials said the accused were arrested soon after the complaint was filed and the survivor underwent a medical examination.

“The accused have been arrested and further investigation is underway,” a police source said.

Investigators are also examining whether the bus was operating illegally. According to reports, the sleeper bus allegedly had tinted windows, which are prohibited, and lacked proper emergency exit arrangements.

Police are now analysing forensic evidence and verifying whether any other passengers were present during the incident.

AAP Compares Incident to Nirbhaya Case

The incident has triggered sharp political reactions, with the Aam Aadmi Party comparing it to the 2012 Nirbhaya gangrape case that shook the country.

Delhi AAP chief Saurabh Bharadwaj condemned the incident and called it a “big shame.”

In a post on X, he said, “Nirbhaya repeated. A 30-year-old woman was picked up in the bus at night on the pretext of asking time. Then she was raped by multiple people in the moving bus for around two hours.”

Delhi Police has not yet issued an official detailed statement regarding the case.
