Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday condemned the attack in Australia and expressed India’s solidarity with the country after the deadly shooting at Sydney’s Bondi Beach.
In a statement, the Prime Minister said, “I strongly condemn the ghastly terrorist attack carried out today at Bondi Beach, Australia, targeting people celebrating the first day of the Jewish festival of Hanukkah.”
He extended condolences to the families of the victims and said India stands with Australia in this difficult time. “On behalf of the people of India, I extend my sincere condolences to the families who lost their loved ones. We stand in solidarity with the people of Australia in this hour of grief,” Modi said.
The Prime Minister also reiterated India’s firm stand against terrorism. He said India follows a policy of “zero tolerance” towards terrorism and supports global efforts to fight terrorism in all its forms.
At least 11 people were killed when two gunmen opened fire at a Jewish event held at Bondi Beach in Sydney. Australian authorities have declared the incident a terrorist attack and said investigations are ongoing.
