A 22-year-old Muslim man, Mueeb of Jwalapur, was brutally attacked by a mob near the gate of the prestigious Gurukul Kangri University, Haridwar, late on June 26. Eyewitnesses say the group of 8 to 10 men targeted Mueeb after identifying him as Muslim, beating him with sticks.
Mueeb, who works as an electrician, was found unconscious and taken to a government hospital, where he reportedly received only basic first aid due to the absence of a surgeon. His family then admitted him to a private nursing home but could not afford prolonged treatment and brought him home. His condition worsened later, requiring urgent hospitalisation.
The victim’s family filed a complaint at Kankhal police station with support from local activists. A case has been registered against unknown assailants, but no arrests have been made so far. A suspect named Pawan was briefly detained and released.
Local groups including Janadhikar Party and Khudai Khidmatgar condemned the attack, accusing authorities of inaction. Hema Bhandari of Janadhikar Party called the assault an attack on constitutional values and demanded strict enforcement of laws against hate crimes.
“The rising number of such attacks and the impunity enjoyed by perpetrators is deeply alarming,” Bhandari said.
