A 45-year-old Muslim man was allegedly beaten to death by a group of unidentified people on suspicion of cattle theft in Jharkhand’s Godda district, police said on Thursday.
The incident took place on Wednesday night in Matihani village under the Poraiyahat police station limits, according to PTI. The victim was identified as Pappu Ansari, a resident of Ranipur village under the Pathargama police station area.
Police said Ansari was assaulted by a group of men who accused him of stealing cattle. He succumbed to his injuries at the spot.
Confirming the incident, Deputy Superintendent of Police J P N Chaudhary said an investigation was underway to determine how the incident occurred and to identify those involved.
“More details will be shared after the investigation progresses,” Chaudhary said.
The officer also stated that the victim had a criminal record and had been to jail on several occasions in the past.
