Former Prime Minister of India, Dr. Manmohan Singh, passed away on Thursday at the age of 92. The senior Congress leader was admitted to the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), Delhi, in a critical condition on Thursday evening after his health deteriorated.

Manmohan Singh, known as the architect of India’s economic reforms, served as the 14th Prime Minister of India from 2004 to 2014, leading the Congress-led United Progressive Alliance (UPA) government for two consecutive terms. He became the third longest-serving Prime Minister in Indian history, with a tenure of 3,656 days, following Jawaharlal Nehru and Indira Gandhi.

Born on September 26, 1932, in Gah village (now in Pakistan), Singh earned a Master’s degree in Economics from Panjab University and a doctorate from the University of Oxford. He began his career in public service in 1971 as the Economic Advisor to the Ministry of Foreign Trade and went on to hold several prestigious positions, including Chief Economic Advisor and Director of the Reserve Bank of India. His leadership during India’s liberalization in the 1990s is particularly remembered for transformative economic policies.

Singh’s passing has led to an outpouring of tributes. Robert Vadra, Congress leader and son-in-law of the Gandhi family, wrote on X, “I am deeply saddened to learn of the passing of former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh ji. My deepest condolences to his family and loved ones. Thank you for your service to our Nation. You will always be remembered for your Economic revolution and progressive changes.”
