Farmers protesting at the Punjab-Haryana border have announced a tractor march across the country on January 26, continuing their fight for the Centre to meet their demands. This announcement came during the ongoing hunger strike of prominent farmer leader, Jagjit Singh Dallewal.

Dallewal, who has been on an indefinite fast at the Khanauri border since November 26, 2024, is demanding a legal guarantee for the minimum support price (MSP) for crops. Despite his deteriorating health, Dallewal has refused medical aid offered by the Punjab government.

The farmers, under the banners of Samyukta Kisan Morcha (non-political) and Kisan Mazdoor Morcha, have been protesting at the Shambhu and Khanauri border points since February 13, 2024, after their march to Delhi was stopped by security forces.

In 2021, farmers had also staged a massive protest against the controversial farm laws, with thousands storming New Delhi’s Red Fort on January 26. The protest turned violent, with clashes between farmers and police, resulting in tear gas, flashbangs, and a tense standoff.

The farmers are now planning a nationwide tractor march on Republic Day, continuing their demand for fair agricultural policies and legal guarantees for MSP.
