Dalit Youth Tied Upside Down and Beaten in Rajasthan’s Barmer District

In Rajasthan’s Barmer district, where a Dalit youth was reportedly tied upside down to a tree and beaten by a group of locals. The victim, identified as Shrawan Meghwal, was filmed while crying and pleading for mercy as he was brutally thrashed. The video, which surfaced on social media, quickly went viral, prompting the Barmer police to take action.

The incident occurred on Friday in a village where Meghwal was accused of involvement in a theft. Station House Officer Gudamalani, Mukta Pareek, stated that preliminary investigations indicated the youth was blamed for a bike theft, which led to the violent act. The police have registered a case against five to six individuals based on Meghwal’s complaint.

“The victim was tied upside down and beaten by the accused. The case is under investigation,” said Pareek.

According to Barmer Superintendent of Police (SP) Narendra Singh Meena, Meghwal had been arrested last month for allegedly stealing a bike at a local fair. After being granted bail, he was again accused of stealing another bike, a claim he denied. The assault reportedly took place after these allegations resurfaced.

“Kumar was allegedly assaulted by the villagers on suspicion of theft. He had previously been booked in another theft case,” said Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP), Sukhram Bishnoi.

A case has been registered, and the police are continuing their investigation into the matter.
