The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) confirmed on Friday that 16 Indian nationals serving in the Russian military remain unaccounted for, while 12 others have lost their lives in the ongoing war in Ukraine. These revelations come as the government continues efforts to dissuade Indian citizens from enlisting in foreign armies.
According to the MEA, a total of 126 Indians have joined the Russian armed forces since the conflict began. Out of these, 96 have returned to India and been discharged. However, 18 remain in service, of which 16 are currently missing. One individual is undergoing treatment for injuries at a Moscow hospital.
“We have been informed of 126 cases of Indian nationals serving in the Russian Army,” MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said. “Of these, 96 have returned to India, while 18 remain. Unfortunately, the whereabouts of 16 individuals are unknown, and they have been categorised as ‘missing’ by the Russian authorities. We are working closely with Moscow to secure their early release and repatriation.”
Casualties and Families Affected
The MEA also addressed the tragic deaths of Indian nationals, including a recent incident involving a 32-year-old from Kerala. Binil T.B., a resident of Wadakkanchery in Thrissur district, was killed in action, while his relative, Jain T.K., sustained severe injuries in a drone attack.
“We extend our deepest condolences to the family of the deceased. Our Embassy in Moscow is in touch with the affected families, providing all possible assistance,” Jaiswal stated. “We are coordinating with Russian authorities for the swift return of the mortal remains and the repatriation of the injured individual.”
Government Intervention
The Indian government has raised concerns over the participation of its citizens in foreign conflicts. Prime Minister Narendra Modi addressed the issue directly with Russian President Vladimir Putin during their meeting in Kazan at the BRICS Summit in October last year.
The MEA reiterated its commitment to securing the release of remaining Indian nationals still serving in the Russian military. “The matter has been strongly raised with Russian authorities in Moscow and the Russian Embassy in New Delhi. We have demanded the early discharge of Indian nationals still serving in the conflict,” Jaiswal added.
Despite government warnings, cases of Indians joining the Russian military have persisted. Many are believed to be recruited under dubious circumstances, with little awareness of the risks involved. The government continues to monitor the situation and work toward repatriating those affected by the conflict.
