The deadly attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir, that claimed the lives of 26 tourists on Tuesday has sparked strong reactions from the global cricketing community. On Wednesday, Australia captain Pat Cummins and India all-rounder Hardik Pandya condemned the attack before the IPL 2025 match between Mumbai Indians and Sunrisers Hyderabad in Hyderabad.
Both captains wore black armbands as a mark of respect for the victims and extended their heartfelt condolences to the families affected. “I would like to pass on the message and condolences to the families who lost their loved ones in the terrorist attack. I strongly condemn, our team strongly condemns these cowardly acts,” Hardik Pandya said during the toss.
Pat Cummins, who received a warm reception at the toss, spoke on behalf of the Australian cricket community, saying, “Yeah, it’s been heartbreaking to see. From all of us at Sunrisers and also from all the Aussies who are loved here in India, our hearts go to all the victims and the families of all those that have been affected.”
The attack, described as one of the worst in Jammu and Kashmir, took place in the scenic Baisaran meadow, a popular tourist destination. Armed assailants, dressed in fatigues, opened fire on the tourists, resulting in widespread casualties.
Before the toss, veteran commentator Harsha Bhogle also offered his condolences, and the official broadcast team, including Anil Kumble, Ambati Rayudu, and Mark Boucher, observed a minute’s silence in memory of the victims.
In a show of solidarity, all players, support staff, and members of the broadcasting team wore black armbands during the match. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) ensured that there were no customary fireworks or cheerleader performances, in respect for the victims.
Earlier in the day, several Indian cricketers, including Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma, Mohammad Siraj, and Mohammed Shami, condemned the attack and called for swift action against the perpetrators. Former cricketer Shreevats Goswami went further, urging a complete boycott of sporting ties with Pakistan in response to the attack.
Witnesses from the attack site described a horrifying scene, with bodies scattered around and locals rushing to help the injured.
