In Tarwada village of Rajasthan’s Rajsamand district, a Dalit family had to seek police protection to ensure their son’s wedding procession could take place safely. This came after fears of disruption due to caste-based discrimination.

The incident gained attention when the National Commission for Scheduled Castes (NCSC) stepped in. The commission wrote to the Rajsamand Superintendent of Police on Friday, asking the local police to provide security to the groom’s family. They also asked for a report to be submitted within 15 days.

“We have deployed 170 police officers in the village. We also have drones to monitor the situation,” said SP Manish Tripathi.

The wedding procession was successfully held on Saturday, and the wedding ceremony is scheduled for Sunday.

The need for police protection came after the groom’s brother, Suresh Bamaniya, wrote to the district police requesting security. In his letter, he mentioned a 2022 incident where another Dalit wedding procession in the region was disrupted.

The Commission took suo motu cognizance of the request, especially since just last week, a Dalit groom in Madhya Pradesh was attacked for riding a mare during his wedding.
