Bihar Police on Friday arrested a 20-year-old man for allegedly shouting abusive slogans against Prime Minister Narendra Modi during Congress leader Rahul Gandhi’s Voter Adhikar Yatra in Darbhanga district.
The accused, identified as Mohammad Rizvi alias Raza, was taken into custody from Singhwara locality after BJP’s Darbhanga district president, Aditya Narayan Choudhary, filed a complaint. Police said Rizvi, along with other unidentified people, has been booked under relevant sections of the law.
The incident happened on Wednesday when the yatra was passing through Darbhanga town. A video surfaced showing a young man on stage using an expletive against the prime minister. According to reports, Rahul Gandhi, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra and RJD leader Tejashwi Yadav had already left the spot for Muzaffarpur when the slogans were raised.
Darbhanga police said the accused would be produced in court and further investigation is underway to find out who else was involved.
The BJP strongly condemned the remarks. Union Home Minister Amit Shah called the language used against Modi and his mother “a blot on democracy.” He said, “The Congress has reached its lowest ebb under Rahul Gandhi’s leadership. They cannot bear the fact that the son of a poor mother has been prime minister for 11 years and has taken the country forward.”
Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar also called the incident “extremely disgraceful.” Lok Janshakti Party chief and Union minister Chirag Paswan said, “The kind of filthy and low-class language used for Prime Minister Narendra Modi ji from the platform of Rahul Gandhi and Tejashwi Yadav is not just condemnable but shameful. The people of Bihar will not forgive these insulting words.”
The Congress, however, denied responsibility. Party leader Pawan Khera claimed the slogans were actually raised by a BJP agent to divert attention from the opposition’s campaign. “They just want to create an issue… Their theft has been caught, so these people are frustrated,” Khera said.
The Voter Adhikar Yatra is part of Rahul Gandhi’s campaign in Bihar, aimed at highlighting alleged irregularities in electoral rolls and mobilizing public support before elections.
